Steel garden furniture that actually fits your space
A standard catalogue bench dropped onto a patio rarely looks right. The proportions are off, the finish clashes with the gate, or it simply does not fit the awkward corner you had in mind. That is where bespoke steel comes in.
We design and fabricate custom steel garden furniture by hand at our workshop in Draycott, and we work with homeowners, builders and commercial clients right across Mansfield, Ilkeston and the wider Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire area. If you can sketch it, photograph it or describe it, we can build it.
What we mean by custom steel garden furniture
Bespoke is not just a word we use for marketing. It means every piece starts as a conversation, moves to a drawing or sketch, and ends up fabricated specifically for you. No two jobs are identical.
The kinds of pieces we make for gardens include:
- Benches and seating frames (with timber, composite or steel slats)
- Dining tables and coffee tables for outdoor use
- Planter frames and raised bed surrounds
- Pergola frames and canopy structures
- Firepit surrounds and log stores
- Garden screens and privacy panels
- Custom brackets, fixings and structural supports for garden buildings
If it involves steel and it lives outdoors, we can almost certainly make it.
Why steel works so well in the garden
Mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium each have their place outdoors, and choosing the right material is part of the design conversation.
Mild steel is the most versatile and the most commonly requested. It takes paint, powder coat and wax finishes well, and it gives that solid, substantial feel that aluminium cannot quite match. Left to develop a controlled rust patina (sometimes called Corten-style), it can look genuinely beautiful in a garden setting. The trade-off is that bare mild steel will corrode if the finish is neglected, so surface treatment matters.
Stainless steel is the low-maintenance choice. It handles rain, frost and coastal air without complaint, and it keeps its finish for years with minimal effort. It costs more in material and takes longer to work with, but for a piece that will genuinely last a generation, it is often worth it.
Aluminium is the lightweight option. It will not rust, it is easy to move around, and it suits contemporary or minimal garden designs well. We work with aluminium regularly, particularly for balcony furniture and screens where weight is a consideration.
We use MIG and TIG welding in-house. TIG welding gives cleaner, neater joints on visible pieces where the weld itself becomes part of the aesthetic. MIG welding is faster and equally strong for structural work that will be painted or powdercoated over.
Designing your piece: from sketch to finished article
You do not need a technical drawing. Most of our best jobs have started from a photo on a phone, a rough pencil sketch on the back of an envelope, or a description of a problem that needed solving.
Shelly and the team have over 20 years of fabrication experience, so we can translate a rough idea into something buildable. We will ask the practical questions: what size, what finish, will it be bolted down or freestanding, does it need to accommodate a specific timber width, how will it be stored in winter?
For customers in Mansfield, Ilkeston, Nottingham, Derby, Long Eaton, Beeston and Chesterfield, we are happy to travel out and measure up on site. Getting the dimensions right in person saves time and avoids expensive adjustments later.
Once we understand the brief, we work up a design and quote the job individually. Every project is different, so we do not publish fixed prices. Get in touch and we will talk it through.
Finishes: making steel garden furniture last
A beautiful piece of steel furniture left without the right finish will not last. This is one area where we are honest with every customer upfront.
The main options:
- Powder coating is the most durable finish for outdoor mild steel. It bonds to the metal surface and provides a tough, consistent layer of protection. Available in a huge range of RAL colours. We work with local powder coaters to get this done and factor it into the job.
- Wax or oil finishes give a raw, industrial look that many customers love. They need reapplying periodically and are better suited to covered or sheltered garden areas.
- Hot-dip galvanising is worth considering for structural pieces that will be in permanent contact with wet ground or soil, such as planter surrounds or pergola footings.
- Stainless steel and aluminium need no protective coating, though a brushed or polished finish can be specified for appearance.
We talk through the finish options as part of the design process so there are no surprises.
Custom steel furniture for commercial and trade clients
This is not just a residential service. We work regularly with builders and developers who need bespoke metalwork as part of a larger project, and with commercial clients fitting out outdoor hospitality spaces, pub gardens, hotel terraces and the like.
If you are a builder or developer working on a site in Mansfield, Ilkeston, Birmingham or elsewhere in the West Midlands, we are set up to fabricate the steel elements you need and deliver or install them to programme. We are used to working alongside other trades and to the practical realities of a live site.
For one-off fabrication jobs or repairs to existing metalwork, our article on Metal Fabrication for Repairs & One-Off Projects: When to Call a Bespoke Workshop covers when it makes sense to bring in a bespoke fabricator rather than trying to source something off the shelf.
Why Mansfield and Ilkeston customers come to us
There are other fabricators in the area. Steel Craft Fabrications in Ilkeston and various sheet metal shops around Mansfield all do good work in their lanes. Where we are different is the focus on bespoke, hand-fabricated pieces for residential and light commercial use, designed from scratch to suit the specific brief.
We are not a production line. We are not set up to make a hundred of the same thing. What we are set up for is the one-off piece that nobody else stocks: the bench that wraps around the corner of a courtyard in Beeston, the fire pit surround designed around a specific fire bowl in Mansfield, the pergola frame that matches the gate we already made for a customer in Ilkeston.
That level of attention to the brief is what makes the finished piece feel right. And it is what keeps customers coming back for the next project.
Our work on gates and railings feeds naturally into garden furniture, too. If you are planning a full garden project and want the steel elements to match, take a look at our piece on Bespoke Metal Gates for Derby & Nottinghamshire: Design from Your Sketch or Photo to see how we approach that side of things.
Frequently asked questions
Can you make garden furniture to match an existing gate or railing?
Yes, and we do this regularly. If we made the gate or railing, we already have the design on file. If someone else made it, bring us a photo and we can match the profile, finish and style closely. Consistency across a garden scheme makes a real difference to how the finished space looks.
Do you deliver and install, or is it collection only?
We install as well as fabricate. For larger or heavier pieces, installation is often part of the job anyway. We cover Mansfield, Ilkeston, Nottingham, Derby, Long Eaton, Beeston, Chesterfield, Birmingham and the wider West Midlands. If you are unsure whether we cover your area, just give us a call.
What is the lead time for a bespoke piece?
It varies depending on what we have in the workshop at the time and how complex the piece is. A straightforward bench frame is a different job to a large pergola structure with welded joints and a powder coat finish. Once we understand the brief and confirm the design, we will give you a realistic timescale. We do not rush work to hit an arbitrary deadline and then deliver something we are not happy with.
Do I need to worry about planning permission for steel garden furniture?
For most freestanding garden furniture, no. Permanent structures, such as pergola frames fixed to the ground or large screens attached to boundary walls, can sometimes fall into permitted development territory depending on their size and position. We are not planning consultants, but we will flag anything that looks like it might need checking. Your local planning authority in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire or Birmingham will give you a definitive answer for your specific property.
