Bespoke Metal Gates for Derby, Nottinghamshire and Everywhere in Between
A gate is often the first thing people see. It sets the tone for the whole property, and a poorly made one shows within a season. We fabricate bespoke metal gates by hand, from scratch, for homeowners and contractors across Derby, Nottinghamshire and the wider East Midlands. Every piece leaves our workshop built to last, not bought off a shelf and bent into shape.
We work from our unit at Draycott Mills, right on the Derby-Nottinghamshire border, which puts us within easy reach of Long Eaton, Beeston, Ilkeston, Nottingham, Mansfield, Chesterfield and Birmingham. If you need someone to come out and measure up, we do that. If you want to send a sketch or a photo and talk through options first, that works too.
What "Bespoke" Actually Means for a Gate
The word gets overused. For us, bespoke means we start with your opening, your brief and your taste, and we build the gate around that. Nothing is taken from a catalogue.
You might have:
- An awkward opening that is not a standard width
- A sloped driveway that needs drop rods or a raked design
- A period property where the gate needs to match existing ironwork
- A contemporary home where you want clean lines and powder-coated steel
- A commercial yard where the gate has to be robust enough for daily HGV use
We handle all of those. We design, fabricate and install. One team, one point of contact, no subcontracting the tricky bit.
Materials: Mild Steel, Stainless Steel and Aluminium
Most driveway gates we make are mild steel, hot-dip galvanised or primed and powder-coated. It is the most cost-effective material for a large gate, and done properly it will last decades without corroding. We MIG and TIG weld in-house, so the joints are solid and the finish is clean.
Stainless steel suits modern properties and commercial settings where the aesthetic matters as much as the durability. It costs more, but it needs very little maintenance long-term. We work in both 304 and 316 grade stainless, depending on the environment and budget.
Aluminium is lighter, which matters if you are automating a wide gate. A heavy mild steel gate on a motor designed for aluminium is a recipe for a failed actuator inside two years. We will be honest with you about that trade-off upfront.
Driveway Gates Across Derby and Nottinghamshire
Driveway gates are the most common job we get called for. Customers across Nottingham, Derby, Ilkeston and Chesterfield come to us with everything from a simple pair of swing gates to a full electric sliding gate installation on a long straight run.
For electric sliding gates, we fabricate the gate leaf, weld the track, and work with the automation kit to make sure the whole thing operates smoothly. Our sliding gates can run up to 5 metres, which covers most residential and light commercial applications. If you have a tight plot and swing gates are not practical, a slider is usually the answer.
A few things we always check before quoting a sliding gate:
- Is there enough run-back on the opening side?
- Is the ground level enough for a track, or does it need a ground rail versus an overhead option?
- What power supply is available at the gate post?
- Is the gate for pedestrian traffic only, or vehicles too?
We ask these questions because the answers change the design. Getting them wrong at the start costs money later.
Wood and Composite Infills: More Than Just Steel
Not everyone wants a fully open metal gate. Some customers prefer the privacy of a solid infill but still want the strength of a steel frame. We offer both timber and composite panel infills, set into a fabricated steel frame.
Composite infills are worth considering if you want something low maintenance. They do not warp, rot or need painting, and they come in a range of colours and woodgrain finishes. We build the steel frame to accept the panel, so the whole gate is solid and the infill sits flush. For more on composite gate options, take a look at our article on custom composite gates in Draycott.
Matching Gates with Railings and Handrails
A gate rarely stands alone. Most projects include matching railings to either side, or a pedestrian handrail running up steps to the front door. We fabricate all of it together so the metalwork is consistent in section size, finish and style.
Across Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire, we see a lot of Victorian and Edwardian terraces where the original ironwork has rusted through or been removed entirely. Replicating period railings from photographs or from a surviving section is something we do regularly. We can match profiles, scrollwork and spacing to keep the street looking right.
For newer properties, particularly on developments around Beeston, Long Eaton and the Derby suburbs, we tend to work in flat bar and square section steel for a cleaner, more contemporary look. If you are also thinking about handrails for steps or a raised terrace, our piece on bespoke metal railings and handrails for Draycott homes and gardens covers the detail on materials and fixing options.
Repairs and Restoration: When a New Gate Is Not the Answer
Sometimes the gate is worth saving. If the frame is sound and it is just the hinges, a latch or a section of infill that has failed, a repair is usually quicker and cheaper than replacement. We are honest about that. We will tell you if a gate is beyond economic repair, but we will also tell you if it is not.
We restore older wrought iron gates fairly regularly. The steel in old ironwork is often better quality than what you can buy new. Strip it back, treat the rust, re-weld any breaks, reprime and repaint, and you can get another 30 years out of it.
Working with Builders and Developers Across the East Midlands
A good chunk of our work comes from builders and small developers who need the metal element of a project sorted while the rest of the build moves forward. We are used to working to site programmes and coming back to install once the groundwork is ready.
If you are managing a development in Mansfield, Chesterfield or the Birmingham area and you need gates, railings and balustrades specified and priced early, get in touch. We can work from architect drawings or come to site and take measurements ourselves. We are open Monday to Saturday, so fitting a site visit around a busy build schedule is usually straightforward.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much do bespoke metal driveway gates cost in Derby or Nottinghamshire?
There is no single answer to this because every gate is different. The price depends on the opening width, the material, the design complexity, whether automation is included and the distance to site for installation. A straightforward pair of mild steel swing gates for a standard residential driveway will cost considerably less than a 5-metre electric slider in stainless steel. The best thing to do is call us with your rough measurements and an idea of what you are after, and we can give you a ballpark quickly.
Do you supply gates only, or do you install as well?
We do both. We can fabricate and deliver if you have your own installer, but most customers prefer us to handle the full job. We come out to measure, fabricate in our workshop and return to install. That way we know the gate fits and the fixings are right.
Can you automate an existing gate, or does it need to be replaced?
It depends on the gate. If the existing frame is structurally sound and the geometry works for a motor, automation is often possible without replacing the leaf. We will look at the hinge positions, the weight of the gate and the available power supply before advising. Sometimes a small amount of reinforcement to the frame is all that is needed.
Do your gates and railings meet building regulations?
For domestic driveway gates, there are no specific height or loading regulations in the way there are for balustrades on raised platforms. However, if you are installing railings alongside steps, a raised terrace or a balcony, building regulations do set requirements for barrier height and loading capacity. We build to sensible standards as a matter of course, but for anything adjacent to a drop, we always recommend confirming the specific requirements with your local building control officer before we finalise the design.
