Metal Fabrication for Repairs & One-Off Projects: When to Call a Bespoke Workshop

One-Off Jobs and Repairs: What We Actually Do

A bent gate post. A snapped handrail bracket. A custom steel bracket that doesn't exist in any catalogue. These are exactly the kinds of jobs we take on every day at Jayded Metalworks, and they're often the jobs other fabricators turn away because the quantity isn't worth their while.

We work differently. Every job we take on is fabricated by hand, from scratch or from your existing piece, at our workshop at Unit 4 Draycott Mills, Market Street, Draycott, DE72 3NB. There's no minimum order, no pressure to batch up, and no job too small if it genuinely needs doing properly.

If you're in Nottingham, Derby, Long Eaton, Beeston, Ilkeston, Mansfield, Chesterfield, Birmingham or anywhere across the East Midlands and West Midlands, we travel to you. We measure up on site, take photos, and bring the job back to the workshop to fabricate it right.

Repairs to Existing Metalwork: Worth Fixing or Not?

Not every repair is worth doing, and we'll tell you honestly if it isn't. A gate that's rusted through at the base, a handrail with cracked welds in multiple places, a frame that's been hit hard enough to distort the geometry: sometimes the cost of a proper repair is close to the cost of a new piece, and we'll say so.

But plenty of metalwork is absolutely worth saving:

  • Gate hinges and posts that have shifted or corroded at the fixing point
  • Handrails and balustrades with single cracked welds or loose spindles
  • Decorative ironwork that's been damaged but the design is worth preserving
  • Steel furniture legs and frames that have bent or snapped at a joint
  • Security grilles and window guards that have been forced or distorted

We work in mild steel, stainless steel and aluminium, and we can MIG or TIG weld depending on what the material and the finish demand. TIG welding in particular gives a clean, controlled result on stainless and aluminium where aesthetics matter. MIG is faster and suits structural repairs on mild steel where the weld will be painted or powder-coated over.

If you've got a piece that needs matching, bring it in or send us a photo. We'll tell you what's possible.

One-Off Fabrication: No Drawings Required

Most of our customers don't arrive with engineering drawings. They arrive with a photo from Pinterest, a rough sketch on paper, or just a clear idea in their head. That's fine. Part of what we do is translate that into something that can actually be made.

Over 20 years of fabrication experience, led by our director Shelly Steer, means we've developed a good eye for what will work structurally, what will look right, and where a design needs adjusting before it gets cut and welded. We'd rather have that conversation at the start than halfway through a job.

One-off pieces we regularly make include:

  • Bespoke steel brackets, fixings and frames for construction and renovation projects
  • Custom garden and yard metalwork: plant supports, fire pit surrounds, raised bed edging
  • Replacement sections for gates and railings where the original fabricator is no longer trading
  • Unique steel furniture: tables, shelving frames, bed frames, console units
  • Structural elements for builders and developers who need the metal component of a larger project

If you're a builder or contractor working across Nottinghamshire or Derbyshire and you need a fabricator who can work from your site measurements and turn things around without a lengthy back-and-forth, that's exactly what we're set up for.

Working From Photos, Sketches and Site Visits

One of the most common questions we get is whether we can work from a photo or a rough sketch rather than a technical drawing. The answer is yes, and it's often the best starting point.

When we visit a site in Derby, Nottingham, Ilkeston or further afield in Birmingham, we take our own measurements. We look at what the piece needs to do, what it needs to fit against, and what finish will hold up in that environment. A handrail on an exposed external staircase in Chesterfield has different requirements to a decorative balustrade inside a new-build in Beeston. Material choice, weld quality and protective finish all follow from understanding the job properly first.

For repairs, seeing the piece in person (or at least seeing clear photos from multiple angles) is essential. Dimensions alone don't tell us whether the steel has thinned through corrosion, whether a weld has failed at the root, or whether the original fabrication had a flaw that needs correcting rather than just repeating.

We're open Monday to Saturday, and you can reach us on 07309 647461 or at jaydedmetalworks@gmail.com to arrange a site visit or to talk through what you need.

Materials and Finishes: Getting It Right for the Long Term

The material you choose matters more than most people realise, especially for external work.

Mild steel is the most cost-effective option and works well for gates, railings and structural frames. It needs a proper protective finish: hot-dip galvanising, primer and paint, or powder coating. Without it, external mild steel will rust. We're honest about that.

Stainless steel costs more but requires far less maintenance. For handrails, balustrades and anything in a wet or coastal environment, it's often the better long-term investment. We use TIG welding on stainless to keep the heat-affected zone tight and the finish clean.

Aluminium is lightweight, naturally corrosion-resistant and suits certain gate and balcony applications well. It's not as strong as steel for the same section size, so design matters, but for the right job it's an excellent choice.

For customers across the Midlands thinking about longer-term projects, our articles on bespoke metal railings and handrails and stainless steel handrails and balustrades go into more detail on material choices and why they matter.

Builders, Developers and Commercial Clients

A significant part of our work comes from builders and developers who need a reliable fabricator as part of a wider project. That might be a set of bespoke gates for a new residential development in Long Eaton, a steel balustrade for a commercial refurbishment in Birmingham, or a one-off structural frame for a renovation in Mansfield.

What we offer these clients is straightforward: we turn up when we say we will, we fabricate to the measurements given, and we flag problems before they become expensive. We don't over-promise on lead times, and we don't disappear mid-job.

If you're a contractor who's been let down by a fabricator before, you'll know how disruptive that is on a build programme. We understand that. Our job is to make the metal element of your project the part you don't have to worry about.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you take on a single repair job, or do you only do larger projects?

Single repair jobs are a core part of what we do. There's no minimum order or minimum job size. If a repair is worth doing properly, we'll take it on. If it isn't, we'll tell you that too and explain why.

How do I get a quote for a one-off fabrication job in Nottingham, Derby or Birmingham?

The easiest way is to call us or send a photo to jaydedmetalworks@gmail.com with a brief description of what you need. For anything that requires accurate measurements, we'll arrange a site visit. We cover Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Birmingham, so getting to you isn't usually a problem.

Can you match existing metalwork for a repair or extension to an existing piece?

Often, yes. We'll need to see the original piece, either in person or through clear photos, to assess the section sizes, profile and finish. Older wrought iron work can be more complex to match closely, but we'll give you an honest assessment of how close we can get before any work starts.

Do you handle repairs to gates, railings and balustrades that were installed by another company?

Yes. We regularly repair and restore metalwork that was installed by other fabricators, including pieces where the original company is no longer trading. As long as the piece is structurally worth saving, we can assess it, quote for the repair and carry it out. For more on what's involved in gate repairs and upgrades, our article on bespoke metal gates for Derby and Nottinghamshire covers the design and build process in detail.
